| So I tried to use compost as mulch. Looks great, good for my soil, seemed effective.
Problem: critters in my area (mostly squirrels) dig through the mulch every night leaving several fist-sized holes. This is fine for my bark mulch--I just push it back on top. But where I used compost as mulch it is now mixed with the soil and while this is good, it no longer really acts as a mulch! Any recommendations? Thanks. |

| Just my opinion - proper finished compost isn't good mulch. It's great when it gets worked into the root zone of the soil, but it doesn't have the rough structure to act as a good mulch, the way straw would. I'd save compost for working into the soil before planting, and go with a standard mulch material. |

| .. Mulch on top of the mulch. It'll work. I didn't like the way the compost mulch would dry out here in dry country so I threw some grass clippings on top. I'm really pleased with the way it came out and so did the worms. Grass clippings on coffee grounds or compost is really great. to sense |

| I'd never use compost as mulch: it's too precious, weeds grow really, really well in it, and whatever's on top, worms won't be there. I encourage worms to hang out as close to the surface as possible, and a thick layer of clippings/straw/leaves/whatever on top of compost does the job. |
