I did it !!!!

Yesterday I went trolling for leaves, and I got 6 bags of shredded leaves, and 3 fuchsia hanging baskets. they were being tossed too. I asked the woman who owned the house if I could take her leaves, well she laughed, asked if I was crazy, then said take them all. Yahoo!!! only down side, I had to bag them myself. But that was ok. I've learned from Sylvia Texas to carry bags in my car. I still can't believe I did that :) lol. I'm thinking of going again tomorrow. I want at least 20 bags hoarded for summer. Must remember to bring gloves.

Soon you might be, if lucky, labeled a compost wacko. :-)

I've been gathering OPBLs (Other People's Bagged Leaves)as well the last few days.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

LOL

FUNNY !!! =)

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Nobody seems to be raking/mowing/bagging leaves around here yet this year. Most trees are still holding on to most of their leaves. Soon, I hope my neighbors will start delivering as in past years.

I also know of a few streets a few blocks away where there are huge trees and usually lots of bagged leaves. I've been watching carefully, no bags yet.

This is my maple today.

Good for you! It's fun, isn't it!

Lloyd, if you ever really want some, just let me know. When those whirlybirds start to fly, they must number in the thousands.

e-mail on the way.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Congrats auntyara. Now, the lazy way is to wait for the night before trash day, and just drive around the neighborhood looking for bags. :-]

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

THANK YOU!.... Now I can show this post to my wife (the Kiki in KikiFoow) and show her that I am not insane (just a wacko) with my checking of every tree in the area when we are driving somewhere!

She also used to be mortified every time I stop the car when I see a great plant I don't know and just go up to the door and knock and ask (I learnt that from my aunt years ago)..... I find it amusing now that she will point out a plant SHE really likes when we are out..... and then tree days later asks me if I have been back to ask what it is so she can put it on the "list" for planting

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Your welcome. but I never claimed I wasn't insane LOL.
I didn't go trolling today:(.
The kids had half a day, maybe tomorrow.

RE: I did it !!!!

We get all my in-law's bagged leaves. My father in law thinks its a hoot to send all his bagged leaves to our house. They last us 3 whole seasons. We used the last of his leaves 2 weeks ago and our leaves started dropping last week. Perfect!

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

O.K.,
I'm up to 16 bags of hoarded, shredded leaves and my composts are too full to turn.:) yeah I'm bragging!
I need 4 more bags to hit my goal. but I'm thinking of upping it. I don't want a "life time supply", DH would freak, but how much is too much? I totally go over board with EVERYTHING I do ,so I'm trying to be "normal" But I've been reading the many virtues of leaf mold, and I want MORE!, MORE!,MORE!
When is enough, enough?!!
This is probably the wrong place to ask,as you are all more "whacko/enthusiastic" than I am.
HELP

I guess that depends upon how much space you have and what you are planning to use the leaves for either compost, mulch or both. My experience with gathering organic matter is that I just can't seem to get enough. The garden beds and the pile eat it up as fast as I can gather it and I'm always adding more.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

That is good that you collected so may bags, but I wonder that your neighbor did not understand or think why you are so interested collecting the leaves. Lol.

Here is a link that might be useful: Bokashi

Laura, do you have a spare bedroom or two? That'll freak out DH!!

You can never have too many leaves!

:-)

Lloyd

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

How do you thread the leaves?

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Laura, do you have space to store bagged leaves? I hide bagged leaves in my woods, and I surround the chicken houses with bagged leaves. It takes one to two years for partial breakdown (the bottom of the bag) and two to three for the whole bag.

So, you can see you've got to get going on that. You may not be interested right now, but come 2011, you may regret not bagging up some future leaf mold now in 2009. Where does your town take the leaves they pick up? I've got a black gold mine nearby. I got an entire compost pile from there yesterday. The bags of chipped leaves and grass were so hot, yanking the contents out of the bag burnt my hands.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

I shred them as I mow the lawn and I also use a toro leaf blower/bagger.
I was looking at my mess of a compost area and it dawned on me that I was nuts.
I've got piles of garbage rotting on the lawn and 16 bags of shredded leaves hoarded to add to more garbage!
It's become so all consuming, my life revolves around this huge mess. I can't keep doing this to my family. This has got to stop! But then I see the oak tree is finally dropping it's leaves and I run for my rake.
I'm secretly hoping it snows soon.
:)Laura

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

My leaf collecting may start tomorrow. I'm aiming for at least 30 bags over the next month, but probably more. I'm going to pile and pack leaves in between and around my rasied beds and hold them down with cardboard. Maybe by next Summer or Fall the leaves will be ready to add to my beds as mulch. I'll also collect many bags for my compost pile. My compost pile went through around 15 bags last year.
This year I'm going to make some circular wire holding areas for my leaves to keep them better contained. I feel I can never have enough leaves.

RE: I did it !!!!

kikifoow, when my son was in pre-med school he had a class where they had to have samples of different kinds of plants. I used to go up to the houses, knock & ask for samples & didn't have one person turn me down. Several times I got tours of back yards & gardens & samples I hadn't know to ask for.

re the leaves, I wait till trash day & drive thru the neighborhood gathering pre-bagged leaves. Love it because I'm not doing the work, tho sometimes I have to empty them & shred.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

annpat, space isn't an issue, thank goodness. I'm just worried about my sanity.lol.
to me leaves look like drugs to an addict right now.
I'm obsessed with them, I dream about them, I drive around looking for my next major score, I plot, plan, and scheme.
(I just had to wipe drool off my chin thinking about them).
Today my son asked "mom, why is there mud all over the back seat?" I told him how the last bags of leaves were a little muddy and He said "Oh good, I thought you were just raking them into the car now."
I couldn't tell if he was joking or giving advise.

RE: I did it !!!!

Last year I was creating a large butterfly garden via the lasagna method and knew I'd need a bunch of leaves. So, this same week last year I rented a U-Haul truck and my best friend and I tooled around town and snagged over one hundred bags of leaves. It was so fun, I don't know if I can resist another trip! But this year I'll just save them for mulching my current beds.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Martha, I wish I had a friend like that! did you split the score? Wait maybe she's an enabler?!! lol
:)Laura

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Laura,
My friend hasn't progressed to the compost wacko phase of her life, yet. So, I got the the entire score. But, you can bet I return the favor in ways she appreciates. We tolerate/support one another's idiosyncrasies. That's what friends are for!

RE: I did it !!!!

When I drove home on Saturday, I noticed that a few neighbors had bags of leaves by their curb. Inspired by this thread, I brought two bags back home yesterday! Now I need to figure out how many bags I can store in my backyard without my wife thinking I'm crazy.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

zardthegardener,
I'm sure She already knows and loves you anyway. After all She is your wife.lol
How many bags before you're considered crazy in your own eyes?, that my original question.
I scored 7 more bags today and even though I see the mess, I just can't stop. Maybe a tarp will help?
Congrats on the 2 bags!!!

RE: I did it !!!!

I got 4 great bags today that were already shredded & mixed with grass clippings. They will be my stand-by piles. I am in a small suburban yard & only have room for one pile (which I am doing in a big yard cart with holes in the bottom due to my terror of snakes getting into the pile but that's another thread.)I could tell by the looks of the bags that they would be great so dropped DH off at home & went back to get them. He condones but doesn't participate. Can't wait till next trash day!

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

I brought home 2 more bags today from 2 blocks down. I didn't want to start the car, so I carried each on my own. Wow do they get heavy. With 3 of my own bags, I have a total of 7 bags. Wife is starting to complain already. I need to do a better job of hiding the bags behind the trees and bushes.

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

I got 24 more bags today. I think I'm closing in on 60 bags. I want to stop but I can't stand to see them go to waste. I rake and fill them myself in broad daylight. Only the best shredded piles for me. I'm a leaf pile snob Help!LOL.

zardthegardener,
Good job! give it a little more time and your wife will stop talking to you all together.lol.
well at least she won't be complaining right?

" I want to stop..."

So Laura, is this like a small town where everyone knows everyone? Just wondering because if you need to attend the LTA* meeting it could be a bit uncomfortable.

RE: I did it !!!!

Aunt, now you are infecting others. After reading about your exploits I really felt like I was missing out on the bargain of the century. There aren't any prebagged leaves for me to score, but as I live near a version of Central Park (leaves literally up to my knees in some areas) I stuff a bag while the doggies frolic. 2 walks a day and I should be up to my tiny yard limit well before I get hauled off to the local nut house. (Our little village is famous for their psych. unit, so manybe people will just think I'm one of the unrestricted patients--I hope.)

If I do get institutionalized are they any composting lawyers/doctors to explain my flight of madness?

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

L.T.A.? yes please. lol
darenka, I swear before finding this forum I was "normal"
I blame it all on annpat,Lloyd, Sylvia, and the rest.

I love leaf season also.

Thirty six bags already mulched into the yard and garden. (My neighbor gave me another 4 bags of shredded leaves mixed with grass clippings for the veggie beds. Nice guy!!)

The fruit trees got a heavy dose of leaf mulch this year.

I know how you all feel. It is addicting when you can get leaves for free and know it is gardener's gold!!

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

I'm so proud!

Fretting over whether you're obsessive can slow you down & that many more bags of leaves will wind up in the dump, so...
stop that right now!

(Do fishermen say, "oh, darn, the fish are jumping into my nets, I better go home so nobody thinks I'm obsessed"???)

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

Well today it finally happened,
I was happily raking shredded leaves into a bag when a car stopped right next to me.
I knew before I even looked up it was the police. 100% busted.
I looked up and smiled, and He said "you know things are bad when people start bagging grass"
I laughed and told him I'm bagging the leaves for my compost." He said "know exactly what you're doing...
I compost too. It's good stuff." He proceeded to give me tips on how I should add lime to control odors. after a minute or so of that he said "well, have fun". and drove away.
I ended up getting 37 bags today. I'm DONE! No more for me thanks. Oh, yeah and the street sweeper was picking them up. I felt like I was being chased. lol
Thanks Sylvia, I almost took the day off. Tomorrow they all be gone. Total this year 91 bags.(OMG)
:)Laura

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

I thought I was crazy taking 12 bags of leaves from my neighbors after I already had 8 bags of shredded leaves from my own yard. After reading this post, I think I am perfectly normal.

61 more bags today, my back's killing me. I'm running out of hiding places, but I have to beat annpat.
It's a loosing battle.lol must call in reinforcements.
I think I finally slipped over that thin line. OMG I've become one of those whacko/enthusiast.

RE: I did it !!!!

Laura, I had other things I wanted to do tomorrow. I had plans. I called my friend Jackie. We were going to have a cookout or something fun. I said, "I'm sorry Jackie. There's this woman named Laura from the internet and she passed me today. I'm going to have to cancel lunch and the other fun things we were going to do, because of this woman. Sorry."

It's going to rain tomorrow, too.

Laura, I don't want to be rude, but what size bags are you using? You're not using little, dinky, plastic grocery bags, are you?

 o
RE: I did it !!!!

LOL, I can't stop laughing. Yes the tiny little bags.
No the regular black garbage bags and a few Giant ones from H.depot.
Do you have a truck? I'm done for if you do.
I'm basking in the glory while I can.

Curt, (sticking out my tongue ) It takes one to know one:)!
