Bird Seed husks for mulch or Comopost?

buford

I have two bird feeders. I use mostly black oil sunflower seeds to fill them. Under the feeders is a thick layer of sunflower hulls. It's probably about 6 inches thick at this time. I used some of it as a mulch for a small flower bed. I was also thinking of adding it to my compost pile.

I realize there can be a problem with sunflowers coming up (there are a few that come up under the feeders) but other than that is there any reason not to compost them? And would they be a green or brown?
