Roundup question

I'm expanding the garden into the lawn and want to plant garlic soon (like last week). Roundup takes anywhere from a week to a couple of months to kill stuff around here depending on the plant (grass dies in a week or so,... mustard, queen anne's lace, et al die off after a month or more). Anyway, I want to get the sod turned and the garlic in soon and I am wondering if I turn the sod 3-4 days after spraying if the Roundup will continue to kill the buried grass/weed roots or if something unexpected will allow the grass to resprout if I don't let it die off first.

This is extra seed garlic so it won't matter if some of it gets zapped by residual Roundup, but I doubt that will happen.

Roundup won't work very well unless the grass is actively growing.

An easier, simpler, and much less expensive way to turn turf into a garden be is to cover the grass with newspaper, or cardboard, and cover that with some mulch and anything growing there will die and feed the soil as well, and you could plant right away if desired.

I second kimmsr's comments. Just dig holes where you want the garlic bulbs and then cover the whole bed with newspaper, manure and leaves. The garlic will sprout right through the layers, but the grass will be smothered.

Exactly what vegetation are you tryng to suppress and how are you turning it? You may not need Roundup at all. Glyphosate works very slowly in the late Fall, but it does work. BUT, for me personally, I'd go for it with the glyphosate, use a little spreader sticker, and deal with the weeds as they appear. Do not worry about residual glyphosate. A tiny amount of soil deactivates it. Hank

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I had already spprayed when I asked the question, and I turned the sod yesterday.

I have tried laying down newspaper and covering with mulch before. That is very time consuming and not very effective. Alot depend on the availability and type of mulch. Plus I don't want to deal with scraps of half rotted newspaper for the next several years. Spraying grass with Roundup is very easy to do, and takes very little time, so in that way it is cost effective. I knew/know how many days it would take to kill the grass if I did not turn it under, I just did not have that long to wait.

Thank you all for your answers.

The effectiveness of mulching over also depends on the type of grass. It won't touch Bermuda and I've got some heavy duty fescue that is tough as nails and will grow up through almost anything.
