I happened upon two guys breaking up a pumpkin display at my local Meijer's supermarket today. I asked what they were doing with the bales. Dumping them, they said. Wouldn't give them to me, but sold me 10 straw bales for $1 each. Helped load them into my pickup. I paid $2.75/bale in the spring, and intended to do it again next spring. But now I'm all set! I've got a second garage to store them in.

I should be so lucky! Great score!

Bales....straw bales. So what do you intend to do with all this straw. If its fresh, its got weed seeds in it. If its for the compost pile, the weeds will grow there nicely and make your life h**l come summer. Put somewhere where the seeds can be taken care of, it can be a great comfort for where you have strawberries growing.

Don't worry about the straw! I put two free bales in my compost pile last fall and I never got one weed growing out of it! In fact, I even used some for mulching over winter too. I say, have at it and lucky you! Cathy

A buck a bale for something you were going to buy in the spring for more than twice that? Sounds like a heck of a good deal to me. (applause in the background) Some equipment is so efficient at thrashing the seeds out that not a lot of seeds are left in the straw. Now my old Massey 750 is a bit tuckered out so it isn't efficient as it used to be so there are some farmers (me included) that would have seedier straw. Hit or miss on how clean the straw is that you got but any "weeds" growing from a straw bale will most likely be from seeds of the original crop (wheat=wheat, oats=oats, etc. etc.). In a compost pile, the seeds will usually, A) be destroyed by heat, B) rot in the moisture, or C) germinate. If A or B, no problem, if C, turn before the new "weed" goes to seed and not problem. Now if you're talking hay, that could be a whole different story. Lloyd

Right, hay definitely you want to avoid using. Way too many seeds there. But, straw, no real problem I think. It breaks down for me fairly quickly too in my pile.
|
Right, I actually did score a bale of hay, not sure what kind (Timothy). I may post a question to see what folks recommend.

Just got a call from Dan Marshall, one of those hobby giant pumpkin growers, "can I bring you 3000 pounds of pumpkins?" He has to chop them up to transport them and will bring them out towards the end of this week. Gotta remember to take pictures. Lloyd

Hi Brother Lloyd, Would you mind grabbing a couple of Seeds from the Giant Pumpkin and sending them to me ? I wanted to grow a big one next year ,.... Thank You Man ;-) Jon E. Hughes
|
Hi Jon Good to "see" you buddy. I had buried the pumpkin pieces in a windrow right after I took the picture but I don't remember seeing any seeds. So I went out and dug some up this morning and sure enough there are no seeds. I am assuming the guy took them all for some reason. Leave it with me and next time I talk to him I'll see if I can get you some. Lloyd
