Concerns with using shredded office paper

Hey all.... I have access to a lot of shredded office paper from work, but have always been a little concerned about using it in my compost pile. It just seems that the inks and chemicals used to make the paper might not be so great for compost that will go into edible gardens. I know that paper shopping bags generally are printed with vegetable inks, and will generally say if they are compostable, but I'm not so sure about office paper. What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Don |

| If your office paper has a lot of shredded envelopes with plastic windows or shredded plastic cards - I would not use it. Other than that, recently there have been threads about using everything from beer boxes to junk mail. Search for "ink metals" in the soil forum - search linked below. |

| The ink is a miniscule quantity on the paper, and it's mostly finely powdered carbon. I would not be concerned about it. I use it now and then, but only as a last resort, because we can recycle it here, and recycling is a better fate for high quality office paper than composting. Your mileage may vary. |

| what would the shredded paper add to the soil... anything? I was considering composting the paper x the shredder also. |

| carbon, vieja. Healthy soil contains lots of carbon. |

Concerns ... What are your thoughts? Objective facts are irrelevant, if you have concerns then you should not do it. |
