| I've read that pine straw may prohibit germination of seeds, and also that it is great in vegetable gardens. Has anyone found that it prevents veg seed from germinating?
The pH in my raised beds is too high anyway, so I thought a light layer (1/4 inch) of pine needles would make a good winter mulch over a layer of compost. The needles are dried out, not fresh. Am I making a mistake? Zuni |

| A thick enough layer of pine straw will keep many seeds from germinating, or if they do germinate keep the seedlings from getting the sunlight those seedlings need to grow so they die. An inch thick layer probably will do little while a 4 inch thick layer of pine straw will work quite well at keeping plant growth to a minimum. |
