100,000 to 700,000 M, what is it mean?

I am not familiar with the use of M in that context. In chemistry M is usually molarity or moles/liter, but in this context (peroxide in rainwater) the molarity would be a tiny number, orders of magnitude less than 1. It must mean something else here, perhaps micromoles/liter (millionths of a mole).

I must be missing something. I would read that as 100,000 to 700,000 moles of H2O2 per liter of water. That wouldn't make sense though. 1 mole of H2O2 would weigh 34 grams. That would mean there would be a minimum or 3400000 grams of hydrogen peroxide per liter of water. In other words, the rain would be primarily hydrogen peroxide and about, at the high end, .03% water. (of course, not taking into account the trace amounts of other stuff like nitrate, sulfate, helium, etc.)

Curses, beat me by 3 seconds. And yes, I googled around for numbers and saw it being reported as micromoles in the single digits. Even if it was transcribed incorrectly and should have been µM, these numbers would still be way too high. |

oops, seconds = minutes. Whatever, it's early.

Agreed, 100,000 uM would be 0.1M peroxide, which is enough to bleach your hair with some left over. :-] Something hinky going on here, that's for sure.

That's the Interwebs for you. May be the exact thing that happened with the article in question, only it left symbols behind rather than adding extra ones. Re hair...it's the way of things, but I have serious objections to the whole getting old and dying thing. Still trying to figure out who to send the memo to.
