compost in tumbler turns into balls of goo

Looks like horse manure. I have a tumbler from Costco with air tube low center. Only a third full now. Was two thirds full to start. I tumble it five or more rotations (almost) every day. It seems to be wet enough. Straw is 'cooking' the least. I suppose that is to be expected. It is green stuff from our garden, some leaves, some grass clippings, a little fruit and vegetables, chicken manure. I added some 'Compost Starter' and some ammonium sulfate. The stuff is balls of goo. Any ideas what I could to make it work? -jeff

Material placed in a composter that clumps together does so most often because of too much moisture in the mix.

i had this problem when i originally started tumbling. add dry material like leaves and make sure you shred them up well. try leaving the lid open for a day, too.

I would add leaves as well. When you start your next round try 50% leaves "browns", 50% other(in this 50% I like 20% manure 30% "greens.")

Sandy and Martin installed rods going through their tumblers to break up clods and balls, seemed to work well for them. There was a really old thread with some pictures on this but I can't find a link to it anymore. Sandy, if you're around can you re-post the pictures of yours?

"Straw is 'cooking' the least."

Previous discussion mentioned this issue as well.

Clumping of materials was a problem I had more with my tumbler, and less with my mesh bins.

Try:

1) shredding the material into smaller pieces.
2) reduce the moisture of materials going in
3) Mixing the materials before putting them into tumbler

Found the old thread with pictures of Sandy's tumbler with the rods installed.

Being a wormer, I say perfect.
The worms love to play ball with compost goo!
At least mine do. The goo balls are always anaerobic too.
That way I can tell that the worms aren't loafing.
