Hoarding vs. Composting

I was feeling a bit of a hoarder as I sorted through the 15 bags of leaves & yard waste I had collected this week. But then I realized that we are not hoarders. We don't just collect stuff, we collect it to let it rot and use it! Though my daughter did scold me for having my leaf piles too big. I told her not to worry, that would be mulch as soon as we get a good frost.

If you can shred the leaves, they will shrink and will rot faster. Adding some horse or cow manure with bedding will help them rot too. But you're right, it's not hoarding! It's growing.

The leaves are not a problem for me. What is a problem in my house is getting the family to put the veg peels and coffee grounds in the kitchen container instead of the garbage can, so much goes to waste.

I have all of the leaves of the neighborhood in "pens" 4 ft deep up against my garden fence. They will be used for mulch next year and covered with grass clippings to keep the heat down (the dark color absorbs sunlight and can cook plants). They will be turned under at the end of next year, but the worms and bugs eat most of them before that time comes.

Fifteen bags does not constitute a hoarder, 200 bags a week is a hardcore composter. Hoarding would be a person who drags the bags into the garage, basement, and bathroom.
