Best soil for pandanus?

| Can someone tell me what I should be using when I repot a good sized pandanus I have? It's currently in a mixture of commercial cactus soil (I think that's what it was called), potting soil, perlite and some everyday sand. Sounds as if it shouldn't have the sand, and the plant is struggling a bit (leaves browning at ends) so I think I should repot. Bit of a big job with this plant so I want to get the soil absolutely RIGHT!
I have no idea what kind of pandanus this is -- it was given to me with no idea -- but it is does seem to be a pandanus: it sits atop significant air roots, has serrated (VERY SHARP!) leaf edges, etc.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Are there commercial products that would be best or what would a good homemade mix be? |

| Check on the Container Gardening forum - there are various recipes for superior potting soils there that offer qualities often lacking in commercial, bagged mixes. I don't grow this plant myself, but from the literature it seems that any high quality, moisture retaining but fast draining potting soil would suffice nicely. Look specifically for Al's 5-1-1 recipe. The 'gritty' mix would work also but may require more attention to watering. It is somewhat less moisture holding and is often recommended for woody plants or succulents. The browned leaf tips generally indicate uneven watering practices. |
