Hay bale in the middle of the road

| I was taking the slow road to Jeff City a couple weeks back when my progress was stopped by a hay bale right in the middle of the two-lane blacktop I was on. I threw it in my trunk for safe-keeping (I drive a little rice-burner, not the best for a compost freak) and looked for a possible owner. Seeing none, I continued on my journey and now have the hay on the side of my compost pile. I am second generation off the farm so I am very familiar with the quantity of weed seeds in hay as opposed to straw, though actually it is a kind of hay I have not seen (possibly timothy or just fescue). I have been feeding a little bit into my compost, not sure if you all had any specific advice. I know that it will double or triple my weed population if I don't manage to cook down the weeds, but frankly, my garden has a lot of weeds anyway. I don't fret about them but use them as an excuse to do some aerobic weeding in the early morning dew of summer. Has anyone had success using hay in their pile? |

| Everyday I pick-up horse manure from our friends. Often they will have alfalfa mixed-in with the manure. I throw it all in one of my compost bins and have never had a problem with weeds. I also have an endless supply of straw and also use that in my compost. If it were me I'd go ahead and use it but then that's just based on my experience. Greg Southern Nevada |

| I'm with grateful. Mulchers don't give a whit about weeds. In fact, I mulch with hay. |

| I like Michael's reply! As I said in my original post, I don't care about weeds either, I was mainly asking for how people used hay, especially I assume this is Timothy hay. So far, I have just been mixing it in with the other compostables, including some big recent score. |

| I use it liberally in my compost, as a cover for things that are odoriferous---like lobster shells. I've also used hay bales to build things like a compost bin once, a raised bed once, and a cold frame once. The cold frame got torn apart in January by two dogs who discovered, unfortunately for them, that a porcupine had taken up residence in it. |

| doowad: thanks, the first thing I thought of when you mentioned a bale in the middle of the road in your post title was either a big round or square one. As you probably know, a big bale in the middle of a 2 lane road would make for an quite a hazard. Glad it was a small one but even a tight small square alfalfa bale would be like hitting a large rock darned near at highway speeds, especially to yer rice burner. Oh yes, I use wheat straw since it is readily available and weed free as well as light weight. I wouldn't care to import any weed seeds as I have enough weeds to deal with already, don't need any new species. |

The title of the post reminds me of a snappy country song....my husband scored 3 hay bales for me as a neighbor was taking down her Halloween decorations. If I saw a hay bale in the middle of the road I would be upset becoz probably couldn't pick it up and would hate to pass it by. I definitely can't pick up these 3 that DH brought home. I plan to use mine to mulch a long narrow area that I grew melons in this year. Laurie |

I thought the same thing about the country song. Funny that you mention it, I actually left this forum 5 years ago because folks didn't appreciate a mix CD that I posted as background music to turning my compost pile with an ice cold Stag beer. And it was never really a hazard, it would have been to someone texting or eating or something else they weren't supposed to do by driving. And you would have to be really distracted to hit a big round bale! It did just barely fit in my trunk, though I can haul straw bales in my back seat. |
