What do people do with the bags?

My mower does not shred the bags, they get tangled up. So after emptying 90 or 100 of them, I had a lot of empty bags. Due to rain, none could be reused. I ended up just adding most of them to my working pile on top of a bunch of kitchen stuff dusted with alfalfa and under all the shredded garden scraps and a bunch of leaves. If I hadn't been getting tired, I suppose I should have at least ripped them a bit. They were pretty wet from laying around the ground in the rain the past few days, so they "should" rot fairly easily. However, I guess I will just have to wait till Spring and pull the "clump" of them out and break it up, that is if it clumps. I had so many left over that I also put a bunch in my holding pile and weighted them down with some sod I had dug out of my iris beds. Then I even layered on top of my "finished" pile and then piled the last shredded vegetation and leaves on top of them to weigh them down.
Just wondering if anyone else had other ideas. I have been able to salvage them in past years and pass them back to my goodly neighbors who provided most of the leaves (and pine needles).

What kind of bags are you referring to?

I assume not plastic.

I use my as mulch under my wood chips on paths. I use them in lieu of plastic garbage bags for trash, and I compost some in my piles.

Uh, the leaf & mulch bags that we (wackos, that is) snatch from neighboring curbs...

RE: What do people do with the bags?

I collect about 25-30 bags of OP leaves each fall to sit over the winter in the bags and soften. I like to use the mushy clumps of leaves as mulch in some gardens and around shrubs and such. By the spring, the bags are a tattered mess, partly because the squirrels love to rip off pieces of the bags all winter to fortify their nests.

Any extra bags or other types of paper, such as shredded paper, packing paper, etc. are used in lasagne sometimes or get piled somewhere to decompose, usually a spot where I'm trying to smother some weed underneath. I just picked up 6 huge bags of packing paper from the curb by a house where the people had recently moved in. I will use some for packing, but the rest will be piled outside. Better than all this going into the waste stream!

Btw birds just LOVE using shredded paper to make their nests.

terrene, they like dryer lint too.
I put the plastic bags in the recycle bin.
If it rots, then I compost it.

I put a notice on Freecycle to see if anyone wanted to re-use the paper bags. Not one response and now I have close to fifty perfectly good bags sitting in the machine shed.

I live on the top of the coastal bank by Cape Cod Bay where erosion is always a problem, although the bank is mostly vegetated now. There's a very steep slope and small areas slip almost randomly, maybe by traffic of critters or turkeys traversing the bank.

I've been filling the paper lawn bags with compost, tying the bags with twine, cutting a few slits in the bag, and pushing them over the edge in strategic spots. Like under the big red oak which is right up at the precipice. I then cover the bags with branches or brush or whatever is in the way. I'm hoping that these bags will form a stable foundation so plants will root into them and help stabilize the bank.

I give them back to the neighbors who are kind enough to tote/drive the brown bags full of leaves onto my curb.

This is the first year I am ready to say "Thanks! Please stop!". My two 5'x9x2' high bins are crammed full, and all the trash cans are full.
