Boxelder bugs in the compost

Most years I vaccuum up bags of lady bugs this time of year but for some reason, they weren't that bad this year. Instead we have unbelievable amounts of box-elder bugs. At least these guys don't bite and also don't hang around inside the house all winter long!

Anyway, so far I have completely filled four car-vac bags with dead ones and all are going into the compost. Every day we have over 60 deg. brings them out big time --- I'm looking forward to cold weather.

RE: Boxelder bugs in the compost

Like the Asian Lady beetle Box Elder bugs like to spend the winter in places like our homes, and like the Asian Lady Beetle they are largely not much of a problem since they eat nothing. We see maybe 3 or 4 a month, never enough to need a vacuum to pick up. That many may indicate they have too easy access to the house and air leaks that can increase heating costs as well.
