Lasagna Garden Material--Is this OK?

Hi, folks, I'm starting my first lasagna bed and have been doing much reading and research about materials for layers, browns and greens, etc. I'm ready to go, but...

I recently moved, and besides the cardboard boxes, have this packing material that was used to wrap large pictures, mirrors, etc. It appears to be two layers of kraft paper with some batting or padding material sandwiched in-between. Does anyone know what this is? I've been recycling it, but it suddenly dawned on me that I might use this for layering in the bed if it's safe. I have yards of this stuff.

Any thoughts?

Most of that I have seen is plastic sandwiched between paper. Not something I'd use in my garden.

Hello retiredprof...I also meant to suggest that you use my method of handling kitchen garbage. I have a blender that I bought from Wally-World for around $20 bucks that I process all my kitchen scraps through. I take this liquid blend and pour it on my Ruth Stout bed after I pull back the mulch. That way it's ready made for the creepy crawlies and worms. You can modify that method too by takin' a crow bar and driving a hole and pourin' in the material. This way you don't have to worry about critters gettin' your kitchen scraps or steppin' in it...:-) and it can get slippery from scraps and you can take a flip...ask me how I know...:-) Oldmainer

I have a lot of that, too. I think it's reinforced with nylon thread, which won't break down, so you'd be left with a mess when the paper deteriorates.
I've done the most haphazard lasagne composting for years; I line the garden with newspaper, then just keep tossing. I started one in an area that was as hard as a rock, and after just two months, the soil is loosening. Have fun with it.

You could try taking a bit of the lining and burn it with a match. If it turns to fine ash it's probably okay, but if it melts it's plastic, nylon etc.
