A proud moment: steaming pile

I went to stir my compost bin today and it *steamed*. I've never had steaming compost before. UCG have made all the difference. My partner works at Circle K and recently realized that there is a garbage can right under the coffee maker that rarely gets anything else thrown in it besides UCG w/ filters, and the package the coffee comes in. It only takes a few minutes to pick the plastic packages out of a big bag full of UCG. My pile has never been happier. I know some have said that UCG are so moist they can bog a pile down and inhibit decomposition, but here in southern AZ I have a hell of a time keeping my piles moist, and this is actually helping a lot. With plenty of dead leaves and wood shavings in the pile for browns, it's really cooking.

Yep! They work well, don't they?? Nice stuff!!

Is this ever a small world or what!?! I get my UCGs from 2 Circle Ks, one of which I am the Manager. :O) We have automated coffee machines here on the Canadian east coast, so no filters, although I used to compost with UCGs mixed with filters.

A couple of years ago I kept a warm/hot pile going all winter long with UCGs, shredded leaves, and old grass clippings. It was a challenge, but now I know it can be done and have moved on. :O)

Congrats! There is nothing like a steaming pile to make my day.

Tiffy, I think Circle Ks and the like could be an excellent untapped resource for UCG. I guess it would depend on the management of each individual store as to whether they would let someone from the general public have their trash, since they don't have a corporate policy like Starbucks. But they sure do make and sell a lot of coffee.

I think winter is going to be prime time for composting here in the desert, since it is easier to keep the piles moist, and it never freezes for long.
