| I can't seem to find (or even no how to search for) companies that blow in mulch in the SE WI area. I've been googling to no avail. I've called several companies and asked if they know of anyone and no luck there either.
There was a company called Ultra Mulch in Sheboygen Falls but they appear to have gone out of business. Any suggestions? |

| I believe that it was a short lived gimmick. I haven't seen any ads for this kind of service in two or three years. |

| You should be googling something resembling my link (below) I use them a lot, totally awesome, when I am paid to fill pools ,it is a sight to see, I have had four trucks side by side simultaneously shooting decomposed granite 90 feet ,setting it down on a dime. Totally cool ;-) |
Here is a link that might be useful: Conveyored materials trucks

| The road construction crews around here use a 'hydromulch' system when they seed large areas. First straw is blown on by a truck with a blower machine mounted on it, then they shoot a liquid slurry of newspaper fiber and water. When it dries it glues the straw pieces together into a mat which is pretty durable and holds the soil down until the grass seed can sprout. I don't think this is what you're looking for but it's pretty cool to watch. |

| Sure is interesting to see that kind of stuff. Rhizo, perhaps you're right as I know they need to go with pretty fine particules. In that case the stuff probably breaks down so quickly you need to reinstall again the very next year. I need 45 yards installed and that is donkey work. I want to focus my energy on my plantings instead. I've gotten two quotes so far and it runs $45 per yard installed (that includes the mulch). Not terrible I guess. |
|
| I'd ask to see the mulch. Find out if it's BARK as opposed to wood chips and find out the size of the particles. Some of the bigger landscaping companies may offer the service. I used to see it quite a bit, as I said, but I haven't been around any big landscaping jobs lately, either. |
|
| I made one call to a larger landscape company and they said they used to do it but the blowers are so powerful that some chips or even pebbles go projectile and damage cars, plants, windows etc. They did admit its much more efficient but has limited uses due to the reason listed above and the fact that you can only get an extension up to a 150'.

| I wonder what it would cost to have the mulch delivered and dumped by a hauler, then hire some high school kids to wheelbarrow it to the beds and put it on. |

| I 2nd idea about high school kids .... maybe a "match" between teams [wrestlers v football, Jr v Sr varsity]... you provide food and "wages" go to buy sporting equipment. My boys were wrestlers and I think I recall something of this kind for them. |
|
| That is a good idea as that is what the nursery will likely use. I could put something on craigslist but who knows what you're going to get. |
|
| whaas, the ones that I have seen operated by commercial landscapers were being used easily in residential areas and small commercial landscapes surrounded by parking lots and highways. Google 'blowing mulch' and most of the images reflect the kind of equipment I'm talking about. I suspect that it has gone out of favor in today's economy, since it dramatically raises the cost for the consumer. It's difficult to justify $45.00 for a cubic yard of mulch. |
|
| So here are the quotes to manually install 40 yards of hardwood mulch. No one does blown in mulch around here. 1 and 2 where definitely smoking something. Its hard for me to even justify the $1,800. I could probably cut it $600 if I pay some HS kids $15 cash per hour. Figure they could do it 5 hours Sat and 5 hour Sunday between two of them. 1) $3,400 |

| glad to see all the pro union sentiment here |
|
| Pro union? Do you mean that whaas should pay $45 per hour to have the mulch applied, lol? |

| Dear rhizo 1 no whaas should do whatever whaas wants to do. I just find the dynamics of when gardening meets money interesting and when you throw in teenagers and a mountain of mulch things will probably only become more so. sincerely, |
|
| Craigslist got me a few hits. Including full time landscapers and college students. Tox, minimum wage is $15 these days, lol. |

| Must be why I don't hire anybody! I'm getting a master carpenter to help me build a shop building for $25/hr, so $15 for yard work seems like a lot. But I get the family rate for this guy. :-] |
|
| It is high but its for a short period of time, so I actually look at it as a total. More people jump at $15 an hour vs $150 to install 40 yards of mulch with one other person. |

| I own a blower, made by Finn corp. best machine ever. We do residential, commercial, colleges, you name it. If you need 40 yards spread manually odds are you will only need 30 yards when spread with a blower. It covers more even and a lot less waste. Not to mension it looks a lot nicer. As for everyone talking about price, like my dad always says you get what you pay for! |

| This is completely off topic, but I generally read through a thread by reading the body of a post before I look at the author, it's just my thirst for knowledge or something I can't be bothered by titles or names, it's when I read a really good or a really bad post that I look at the name, usually it's the usual suspects on both ends. However, there is one I can tell just by one phrase, "Totally Awesome" from Mr John Huges. I love it. Here is this big burley contractor with an fantastic 70's stash and his posts just pop with such enthusiasm and spunk. Keep bringing the joy John, I only wish I didn't live on the other side of the continent, I would love to have a Barbeque with you. |
