| It's been relatively dead here for a day or so. I keep checking and nothing. I enjoy this forum for it's educational value as well as the banter.
So Lloyd - It was 70 degrees here today with blue skies and no wind. I was wondering what your weather's like up there these days - LOL! Would you like for me to send you a little sun? Greg

| Sun we got. Right now -27.1C with a light wind out of the WNW. I am at work right now and today I am working the weather observation position so I am the official weather observer at Winnipeg International Airport. And let me tell you, it is a might fresh out there right now! Lloyd |

| I'm glad that you understand what all that means as I don't have a clue. Greg |

| Greg - Some of us are frozen to death, ha, ha ! Most of us wouldn't have a clue what Lloyd's link means, but it looks interesting. I think Lloyd has the advantage when it comes to temperature and knowing what it feels like. We probably both envy you right now. If you've always been in the U.S. you've only experienced fahrenheit. Here, in Canada, if we're old enough, (and I know Lloyd is) we've tracked our weather in both F and now C. We know what 70 degrees feels like when you say it. Do you have any idea how cold -27C is?? That's about -16 F . Right now we're sitting at about -17C with the wind blowing at about 50 kph, giving us a windchill of -32C. That's even cold for us ! 70 degrees ...... would be so nice right now =:) |

| Well, I think this is now a weather thread, so Hi from New Zealand, where it's heading into summer. Lawns are already beige and crispy, except for random circles of green and happy hawkbit and dandelion. (haha: no kids, no dog = no lawn for me). The first flush of everbearing raspberries are nearly ripe and the garlic's going blonde at the tips. It won't be coming out till mid-Jan though: that "plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest" is a total myth in my environment! Did I hear you say drought? Why yes, they've declared one up North already, which must be some kind of miserable record. I've got to set up more rainwater catchment; I think this might be the new 'normal'. |
|
| And to think i'm still wishing almost everyday for the rain to stop here in our tropical climate and this time of year, hahha. Hope you can get a lot of rain pipimac. |
|
| Altho I compost (or at least collect 'compostables') all year, when I don't actively garden I'm on other forums. I do check in here from time to time. Since this is now a weather thread I must tell you all that even tho I'm further north than Lloyd it's quite mild here. Highs in the upper 30'sF (about 4C) and lows of 30 (-1C). We have sunny days most of the time in the winter so lack of sun is not a problem. We had a long fall and have only had a week of so of frigid temps (-2F/-18C). I've lived in Manitoba tho so know exactly what Lloyd is talking about. I've even flown into YWG in the winter. Glad to be in BC, sometimes gets cold up here but not as cold as Manitoba! Nutsaboutflowers, are you in AB or SK? I've lived in AB also and froze my ears - stupid kid from the coast who didn't want to wear a hat - soon learned! |
|
| Down here in the States, it was 14F this morning...the blizzard went north of me. Since it's cold down here, I presume that it's warmer up polar way...there's about just so much heat to spread around. |
|
| Here in MA on the coast, we just finished up a storm with rain and gusty winds and temperatures in the 50's F. High temp for the day today was 51 F at about 7:30AM, and it's slipping down. Expected to be below freezing for the next four days or so, as it was last week. Confusing temperatures - I've got about three different levels of warm jackets piled up on the kitchen chairs. Not ready for the warm hats yet, just getting by with the hoodie. Claire |

| cold here- It got to 29 Fahrenheit last night (3 degrees below freezing)! "a mite fresh" is a dry understatement- |
|
| The link was a quick look pictorial showing the wind with associated tailwind, headwind or crosswind equivalent for each runway. It also gives the status of the instrument landing components, runway edge lights strength and RVR means runway visual range which is an electronic visibility measuring device (in feet) along the runway edges (what a pilot would see). Still darn cold up here. Overnight it went down to -29C. Didn't see any mosquitos! But I'd rather have our cold than those storms I saw go through the U.S. midwest! Wow! Stay safe everyone. Lloyd |
|
| Lloyd, I Googled your airport on the west side of town on Gooogle satellite map. Airports are nice and breezy no doubt. You look like you have a fairly straight runway to polar air..brr |

| Lloyd--- I can't understand your link 'cause its written in Canadian !!! 19 degrees F here in the deep south this AM----Ouch JB |
|
| It was 3F when I got up this morning. It's 8F now. I HATE this. Karen |

| jonas I almost feel like I am stepping into a self inflicted dose of: Dahhhhhh ; but here goes. are those temps ( 80 degrees for your compost for real? If they are , how do you do it. Its been about 5 to 15 degrees here 60 miles north of Detroit and I cant emagine 80 degree compost. Happy composting Johnny |

| Jonny defiantly real(: Lloyd and others probably have even hotter piles This one was cranking pretty good before it got really cold pushing 140 degrees my only secret is size it is so much easier to make a large pile hot and stay hot. I'm probably not going to open this one up till spring as the snow makes a good insulator too |
|
| Well, my compost pile has a frozen crust on it and I'm now adding materials to the old black box rather than trying to get into the pile. When the black box is full I think I'll try using birdseed bags. I have a lot of empty birdseed bags (and a lot of full birds). While the cold is annoying, I had an epiphany of sorts this morning as I walked to the pile. Frozen dog poop and frozen turkey poop don't stick to your shoes! A small pleasure, but it matters when you're about to re-enter the house and didn't check your shoes. Claire (grasping at straws at the onset of winter) |

| Thanks Jonas You and the others have inspired me to try to beat the cold. I do not have a lot of extra time yet but i will be retiring as soon as my QA partner has his surgery and comes back to work.I may set up a container in my garage / woodshop with a light bulb in it for now . I have 3 bins out by my grapes but they are pretty much just aging now. Happy Composting Johnny |
