Lucky Me!

Contacted my local farrier today.I have gotten manure from him once before and thought I might score again. He told me to come and get it.To my surprise he had piles of it out behind his barn.I hooked up my trailer and fork and headed out. When I got there he was not there but his son was and he said that he would load it with their tractor.I have a small trailer (3-4 yds.).Took less than 10 minutes to load a wonderful load of stuff that has been piled up around a year.I was going to compost it but it is well aged so I don't think I will.I came home and broadcast it in the garden. Will be getting the rest during the next few days. All that said,This is my question. He refuses to let me pay for any of it.Free loading and free material. What would be a nice gift for him for Christmas.I was thinking about maybe a gift certificate or maybe a ham.Any suggestions would be welcomed. This a huge cost savings for my gardening addiction and I would like to show my appreciation.Sorry for the long post.I'll hang up and listen!

That's awful nice of you. I think it would be helpful to know a little about him, his likes - dislikes. You could buy him a gift certificate but to where?

I wouldn't do a ham. Right time of year, but mayve they already have the meals figured out.

How about a nice bottle of wine/ booze that you know he likes?

Or just a generic card rather than a store specific one.

I always go for something edible or drinkable.
The makings of a cheeseboard (good but not-too-challenging cheese, nuts, oatcakes, dried fruit etc).
Really good fudge/flash chocolates.
Homemade Christmas mince pies, or any home baking.
Artisanal cured meat like salami (ok, maybe you need to be good friends to give the gift of meat).
Homemade preserves.
Port, whisky, homemade cordial...
But I'm in New Zealand and I imagine our gift/Christmas/culture are rather different!

This guy is a non-drinker so the liquor is ruled out.He is a simple man that has an eight to five and shoes horses as a hobby. He has horses on the brain.May just get him a gift card to the local feed store.Hard to buy gifts for simple folks. He also boards and trains horses as a hobby.

Guess there's nothing to show from your garden yet, huh? Give him some of your organic yield next time if you got the chance?

RE: Lucky Me!

Pay it forward, instead of buying him a gift, make a donation to a food bank or shelter (possibly animal) in his honour. Heck I'd even tell the food bank why the donation is being made but in the end it's the thought that counts.

One good deed leads to another.

Just an update.Moved some more aged horse manure today.Have hauled 12 yds so far.Pile is about half gone. This is some really good stuff. It does not smell like manure,it has a fresh earthy smell.Layered the whole garden with 3" layer of mulched leaves and 3" layer of manure compost. After I get it layered I will tiller it in about 9" deep.Anticipate wonderful results in the spring. Also have equipment news.Purchased my first tractor this week.38 hp used Kubota.4 wheel drive with a loader.Compost pile will be on the increase.g

I think a ham would be a lovely gift. Don't hams keep for a long time?

Good score, btw.

Hickory Farms used to make wonderful food baskets. A friend got one for a master carpenter that wouldn't take money for restoring his dinningroom table. He loved it. They might have a catalog online.

All good ideals, but I would return some of the compost in the form of fresh fruit this spring/ summer. It would gave him food & a chance to offer fresh manure for the hauling.
I went to the race track & they had horse manure mixed with black dirt/rotten humus. Told me to get it all, they remove it from the corral so the wet humus/manure would not rot the feet of their million dollar horses. I was doing them a big favor. I Thank the owner, he LOL & said that he was saving money by letting the "Dirt thieves" have it.

So now we're "Dirt Thieves" huh?

Well as it turned out I sold two loads to pay for the gas for all 5 loads I got. So I made out like a bandit, washed up & took my gal out to dinner too.
