 o
broken concrete walkway near large oak tree

Hi,
I am planning to install a broken concrete walkway in my byard. The path passes by a HUGE live oak tree, within 3 feet of it. So I have a couple of questions:
1) Will this cause any health problems for the oak tree? I think I will have to dig down about 4-6 inches, but I believe the roots are at least 10 feet under.
2) Is there any problem using beach sand for one layer of the leveling? Will the salt in the beach sand cause health problems for the trees?
Thanks for your help,
-aaron

No expert here but I think you'd be ok assuming you don't cut into the roots. The broken concrete will let water drain through and penetrate the ground under the walkway.

I'd steer clear of the beach sand. Again, no expert but I don't know how any salts might affect the tree.
