create desert varnish on rock?

As I understand it desert rock (like basalt) that has a shiny dark surface on it was created with clay, iron and managanese deposits over many years. Is it possible to create this varnish artificially on rock?

Any decent chemist could make up the mix ...

Go to uspto.gov and look up the following patent numbers:
5,308,646

They have recipes in there ... it's the only one that doesn't require a strong (dangerous) alkaline wash first.

Here is a link that might be useful: artificial desert varnish

Thanks! A friend of mine is a biochemist. I'll show it to him.
