Help - Ugly Concrete Patio

| I have a concrete patio that I would like to get rid of. I'd like to have either flagstone or large pavers with a grounnd cover growing in between. Question - if we remove the concrete can we just install the flagstone/pavers since the soil shoud already be compacted, etc.? Or, do we have to do through the process I've read here of using the sand filler, etc. Any pointers would be appreciated. Also, this may sound silly - but is it also possible to break up the concrete so that I have the space and just install the ground covers in the cracks (I know this sounds lazy - but thought I'd ask!). |

First, yes you do have to put down the gravel and sand. If you don't then the pavers or stone WILL heave and sink on you. Second question, if you don't like the look of the concrete patio then you'll like it even less as a broken concrete patio. Plus it would be very difficult to do what you were asking. Good luck! |

Broken concrete patios can be rather beautiful. The trick is to break up the slab in random shapes resembling natural flagstone. You won't need gravel, if the slab was poured correctly on a bed of crushed stone, but you'll need sharp sand for leveling and a sandy loam for planting. |
