stone steps how-to

I'm familiar with retaining wall installation but want add steps between 2 walls and can't wrap my minds eye around how to prepare the grounds under the steps. I'd like to stay away from mortering, if possible.

Dig the ground in the shape of the steps. Start at the bottom and dig into the dirt (i'm assuming) so you can lay yyour first step. Lay it and then dig for the next step. Keep going until you are at the top. Make sure you tie in the steps to the walls on either side for strength.
