Cutting granite stones into pavers?

Hi folks,

I have a question that I hope some of you can answer. I own a house by the water in Gloucester, MA, that's on a property that used to have three small granite buildings around it. All three were destroyed in the Perfect Storm in '91, and needless to say it left a ton of granite lying around our yard. We did a lot of cleanup after that storm and got all the granite into very large piles behind the house and back in the woods, where its been sitting ever since, waiting for a purpose.

Well, now I've thought of a purpose. I want to put a patio near the house and it occured to me that this is a perfect opportunity to use some of that granite. The problem is that all the stones are about the size of a basketball, and they're generally quite rounded on all sides -- not good for patios.

Any advice on how to cut these stones into pavers? Can I do it myself (I'm sure it would involve a heck of a lot of work, but it might be possible), or will I need to hire someone? How much would it cost? My budget is pretty tight. What special tools would I need to do it myself?

I have a million other things that I could do around the yard with some cut granite, so I'd really like to find a solution to this. I figure I will need to choose between breaking the bank or breaking my back. Some advice would be much appreciated!!

I suggest talking to a stone yard and seeing what they suggest. They're the experts, and might have special tools for rent.

We rented a wet saw to cut granite pavers into special sizes. They're wonderful tools. But if you're starting with heavy boulders you have the added problem of man-handling those boulders onto the saw and getting decent cuts.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I went out there this past weekend and realized that I probably have enough relatively flat and small stones to make a patio without having to cut anything. This is going to be my big project this summer so I'll try to remember to post pictures once I get started. I think it will still be a challenge to get it level since the stones are not going to be the same height, but I think it will be possible.

Maybe the stone yard will trade some pa. Bluestone for the granite. Forget about cutting it.you would need a wet stone saw and about a hundred diamoond blades to cut through it all.

Here is a link that might be useful: bluestone quary
