Extending patio

Hello,

I plan on extending our current backyard patio to the edge of our house. This is a relatively small area (about 5' x 10'). The material I am currently planning on using will be much like (or exactly like) this: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=51499-215-104817211&lpage=none

Other than having to likely cut end pieces to line up with the end of the existing patio, I would think this job is as easy as such a job can be. However, never having done this before I'd like to run what I plan to do by you guys to see what you think.

1) Clear and level area. Currently only grass is there and it is quite level already.

2) Add a couple inches of sand to make a bed for the stones. If I tamp the sand tight, would I also need a lower level of gravel or rock as well? I was hoping I could only use sand considering the soil, small scope, and level area I'm working with. The goal is to match the height of the existing concrete patio.

3) Lay the stones flush against each other making sure each is level.

4) Sweep sand in to the cracks between stones. I assume you do this until the sand completely fills the cracks? Then sweep away excess sand. Is there a need to border the outside edges of the stones to keep the sand from washing away? If I only need to sweep more sand in every year or so, that's ok with me. There will be a downspout several inches past where the last stones will be. Should I be concerned with possible shifting/sinking in that area due to the additional water accumulation?

So, I'm hoping its as "easy" as that. Am I overlooking anything important? If there is anything else I should consider, please comment. Thanks!

RE: Extending patio

I think you are really thinking this through. I would certainly use a brick edging border also sold at lowes. I would consider, Do I want to add any electrical lines for outside lights? Is there water or electrical lines under ground? How is this gonna connect to the house itself? I would also consider using a diverter to run excess water from the downspout. Just my thoughts.
