Advice on fieldstone patio

I've recently retired, moved back home and bought a home. What started out as a simple fire pit has grown into a small retaining wall and patio as well.

Our property has probably more fieldstone than I'd ever need so it'll probably be the main ingredient for all three projects.

Reading here and elsewhere I'd come to the conclusion I needed to lay down a concrete slab for the patio and slice the stones down to say three inches thick, then cement them down.

My dilemma centers around some very large stones I want to incorporate into the patio. The largest (so far) is about the size of a bathtub. My mom is an engineer and guesses it probably weighs a thousand pounds. I think my chances of splitting stones this large and keeping them in one piece are slim to none. Would it be feasible to dig a hole to size and shape, fill it with sand and drop these stones in, then cement around them to form a base for smaller sectioned stones? I know it would be a bear to screed the crete but since I'd be "gluing" stone over the top I wouldn't need a skating rink smooth finish.

If it matters the stone appears to be sandstone. Any suggestions?

I've only worked with dry-laid stone, so I can't help you with the concrete part of your question. But one alternative would be to use those large rocks on the outside of the patio and do the concrete on the interior.
