What to mix with salvaged blue fieldstone, and other ???'s

Hi all,
I'm getting ready to build a patio in my front yard, in this space:
I have some approx. 11x18" cut blue flagtone in my backyard that I'm going to move up to this area. I have enough to cover a little more than half of the space. I'm trying to find something cost-effective to mix with the bluestone. I'm thinking I could either use the bluestone as the center, adding something more rustic for a border, or I can mix something else right into some kind of pattern with the bluestone. Any great ideas out there?
Alternatively, is there somewhere I can look to find salvage stones?
I also have a question re: construction. I put the beds in last weekend and added the shrubs. I raised the beds a bit to allow for the grading that will be necessary so that water runs away from the house. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should dig out the sides along the fence, or just add some kind of border that I can have meet up with the beds, then fill with granite dust? If I do this, then I have to somehow grade it so that the border is flush with the ground at the entrance point. I'm not so great at planning these things, so I could use a little guidance to set me in the right direction. Thanks!

| I am not clear where the patio is to go, inside the fence or outside? Do you have a problem with water around your foundation or in the basement from this area, if so building a flower bed right up against the house might be a mistake. Depending on what you want to use the patio for you could have compacted crushed stone (screening or some other, local word) surrounded by your bluestone. |

| Sorry Inkognito. The patio is inside the fence. I don't have a problem with water in the basement in this spot, so that's a nonissue. Since I posted this I actually started my patio. I dug down 8 inches and filled it with crushed stone and created a layout using stone that was in my backyard. Turns out I had enough usable stone for the whole area. But thanks for answering! |
