Concrete Patio / Pebble Landscaping

Hi. I have a concrete Patio (15' x 15') that is flush against my home and garage. In other words one side is against my garage and the adjacent side is against the back wall of my home. About a year ago we built a covered patio that extend 19' from the corner of the garage/home on either side. This left me with 4'-5'of grass on the two other sides of my patio...grass which has now turned to loose dirt which routinely finds its way on to the patio furniture and the concrete slab. Other than it being a nuisance to clean it is horrendous to look at. My wife has decided that she would like me to cover the area with pebbles (example: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=2623-66882-2623&lpage=none ). I am not sure what I need to do to prepare the soil and ensure the pebbles remain where I put them and do their intended job....which for my purposes is to keep the dirt off of my patio. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I had this done before with peagravel because it looked very mediterranean. I had it bordered with square flagstone to keep it in place (it didnt't). We prepared the ground beneath by layering down limescreening and then we topped it off with a landscaping fabric.

I can tell you that it's always difficult to keep pebbles in place. They do catch on your feet and will spill everywhere. However if say the area is a sunken patio it's probably going to be able to stay in place....

Another thing, weeds do end up growing despite that we did lay down a landscaping fabric although these eventually died out.

Wouldn't it be simpler to create a garden of large stones, mulch, weedcloth and pockets for creeping plants like thyme.

May I suggest a rock garden with limited vegetation. First remove 4" of soil, lay down a good quality landscape fabric. If you buy cheap, you get cheap. Lay down and compact 2" of pea gravel, randomly place a few boulders. Plant some drought tolerant plants like junipers then finish filling in with larger 1/2" to 3/4" creek stone. This size is still attractive, doesn't get stuck in your shoes and doesn't wash away. I've had good luck with 6" landscape fiber board for edging with gravel. It comes in brown and green. May I suggest adding those fake stone speakers from Best Buy to make your garden really rock, some Low Voltage lighting and a tall weaping juniper tree, Wish I knew your zone to recomend other plants.
