Flat stones as edging? (Can you tell I'm a newbie?)

I recently saw a lovely flower bed edged with round stones. I'd like to do something like that, but my most accessible stones are fairly flat--the remains of what was once a stone wall. I'd never take an old stone wall apart, but this one fell a long time ago.

Is this doable? Should I put something between the grass and the stones? I don't have the faintest clue of how to go about this. I'm not young...just inexperienced with stone. Is there a book on the subject you can recommend?

Many thanks!

Susan

I have had no problem using flat stones as edgings, in fact in my time I have used just about anything you can imagine, even used 1 quart pots buried 1/2 way for a border edging before....

If you do not lay down a sunken edge like that which is sold in rolls, you will get hard to trim grass growing in between the rocks. to get around this, lay some landscaping fabric down along your future edge and place the rocks on top of it (on the outside edge, you can cut this into 1' strips)and be sure to place rocks in such a manner that your weed whacker can easily get into all the spaces.
