Getting rid of ants in walkway

chibimimi

Our flagstone walkway, built 5 years ago, has polymeric sand between the stones. This sand is supposed to discourage ants, but our ants must be quite courageous, because this year they have begun to burrow under the stones and come out through the polymeric sand. There are small piles of sand in several places. I have two concerns about this: 1) It is unslightly; and 2) they are digging out the sand (regular not polymeric) under the stones and may cause subsidence.

What can I use to put an end to their digging under the walk? We have pets and bees, so I would prefer something that would not harm those.
