What to Replace Gravel Patio Filler With?

Posted by klkvds MD (My Page) on

Last year we had an irregular slate patio put in. The slate is set in stone dust (fine). However the landscaper filled in between the slate pieces with large sized gravel with the idea that it would "harden" once the gravel settled into the stone dust. Of course all we have now is gravel all over the place and want to replace it. Any ideas on what we should replace the gravel with between the slate? More stone dust? Something else like sure pack? We want something that will truly harden so that we have a relatively smooth surface you can walk across. Not gravel strewn all over. Thanks!

cement? that could work and you can dye it any color you want. or you can try to pat down sand, that may work

I'd avoid mortar (cement) because freezing will cause cracks the frist year. Try finding a polymeric sand. It will harden when dry, and become rubbery when wet. I use it for paver patios, and have not tried on flagstone yet.

i would put in the stone dust sweep and hose it in, it does compact well. cement will definetly crack with the stone movement. you may also try a mixture of top soil and a little sand for a more organic look. depending on the joint size you may want to grow some mosses or creeping thyme between the stones, when you step on the thyme it gives off a lemony scent. good luck

I saw a product called polymeric sand. You sweep it into the grout lines and mist with water. It hardens like concrete but stays plyable. I found this website. Good luck

Where I live we often get showers daily in the summer and then go for a few weeks with no rain at all. Would the polymeric sand hold up? The ground is typically damp a few inches down all year round.

Thanks to all. I ended up sweeping in stone dust and periodically hosing it down. It's proved to be little dusty in the beginning, but it's a small price to pay not to have gravel all over the place.
