Laying gravel for landscaping

I am preparing to put some kind (haven't decided on color yet) gravel down in an area between two patios. I have a bush planted there. Problem is I have a lot of ivy on the fence adjacent to this area and it has invaded the area. Previously had wood bark chips there but have cleaned it all out. Have approximately 6 inches deep area to fill. Was going to use fabric underneath the gravel but have read pros and cons on it. What about putting a two inch or so sand base under neath the gravel? Would the sand work it's way to the top? No walking will be done in this area. Should I use the sand and then fabric and then gravel or just the sand and gravel or even just fabric and gravel? Would any of these set-ups hold the ivy down somewhat? Thanks for any assistance.

RE: Laying gravel for landscaping

Not sure I'm interpreting this correctly, but a reason I've noticed in my area that has made me want to avoid loose gravel (unless in can be compacted) or small stones is that leaves get caught in the stones and it's almost impossible to keep the area looking "cared for".

I may not understand what you mean by gravel, but in this man's opinion areas of relatively "loose" stones work best in areas where there is little or not leaf fall.

In the South where we have lots of warm weather and rain, if I didn't put down a 5 or 6 sheet layer of newspaper before I put down the fabric something would have sufficient life left to pop through. Personally I don't see the purpose of sand under gravel unless it will save you money by making the gravel layer thinner.

Let us know. I really haven't a clue about how effective this would be.
