Hi,I was planning to lay a stone foundation for my small 9'x5' gardening shed. Before I actually even read up on the subject ,I removed what little stone that I had on the ground and put clean dirt, soaked it and compressed it as much as I could then was planning to put down a couple inces of sand before putting down the stone(16"x16").After reading thru the forums I am not sure if I should have left the stone in place .Am I still okay to just put down the sand, compact it and then lay the stone?

Thank You ,

Ted

Sand doesn't really compact, it just squishes out. When buiding paver patios a 4-6" base of compacted gravel is laid, and then a 1" layer of sand. The pavers are set in place, and then a plate compactor run over the top. The sand is for leveling, making the pavers stick in place, but the gravel is what provides the base and structure.
