my wall...

| I'm laying a short, drylaid retaining wall, about 18" high, and about 20' long.
First question...the wall is gorgeous...but most especially when it's wet. Is there a way to spray varnish it so it will always be beautiful?
Second question...how, how, how is the easiest way for a woman to cut some of these rocks??? Some of the are 4-6 inches deep. I'm getting scared of it at this point...
Thanks for any help you can offer!

| The blind leading the blind here. I'll be using the back side of granite counter top scrap for my patio. Varnish will not work! There is a product in the tile/stone section at your big box store called "color enhancing sealer" (variety of brands). I've been told a little goes a long way. You'll have to experiment. What I saw was (and I'd been told it would be) expensive: $34 for a quart. I'm using a tile saw to trim odd ends, but mine are all of one thickness. I cut a groove all around and then SLAM! knock it off. I found instructions for field stones that suggested cutting a groove and then hitting in that with a stone chisel and a heavy hammer and break it apart. Google stone scuplting or some such maybe. I hope someone who actually knows something will post for the benefit of both of us. David |

| Thanks David. Yeah, I wish this forum would pick up some... I'm somewhat familiar with stone sealer, and duh...didn't even think of that! I'll keep trying things... I've bought probably 20 books to add to my "collection" on using stone, but I still find I have a lot of questions. We got a masonery blade and my husband did some scoring (?) and then broke the rocks like we were told, but...the rocks I had him cut/break, I wanted the broken parts to show, but you can see the saw marks, too. Not good... Thanks for the help! Update me on your project. I check this forum several times a day... Suzie |
