using stone dust under garden stone

I had a concrete walkway installed. To give it more color, we embedded 18"-20" round, flat garden stones with glass designs on top. Over the years, the glass came out. So, we chiselled out the stone and bought another to replace it. In the process, the new stone is not quite level with the walkway and I was wondering about the preference for using stone dust or sand between the concrete base and the stone as a leveller and around the new stone. Also, I was curious if there was any special trick to using it or campacting it. It is a very small project, but I was hoping for advice.

Thank you.

Hi Owlstone,
Whenever I have to level a small area I always go with the stone dust. You can dampen the stone dust and use a brick as a tamper. If the area is round you could by a small round paver to pound with. Once compacted I also dampen again then wiggle the garden stone into the stone dust to lock in place. The stone dust dries and acts a bit like cement. Hope this helps.
