Will Ants Ruin My Flagstone Path If I Use Sand?

| Lots of good information here...
I am laying a flagstone/fieldstone path (i took out my concrete sidewalk). I was told to dig 6", lay approx. 3" of Class 2 gravel, then 2-3" of sand to set the stones in. I got overwhelmed and called several people to get bids to finish it up...I have put the gravel in and had the sand delivered. One of the guys who came over told me in no uncertain terms, NOT to use sand. He said that ants would ruin the path and that i would have to re-do it in 2-3 years. I have never heard this from anyone else. Could anyone comment on this?
Thank you. |

| Probably true! Ants just LOVE to tunnel through nice dry sand. I have seen them do a job on patios. It's recommended to use polymeric sand on the top to fill the spaces, because polymeric sand hardens up with water and ants can't tunnel through it. Another option is to use stone dust instead of sand. |
