Can I install a flagstone path above ground

Just built a new house and want to put in a 60 ft. flagstone path. The stone is a slate. The area for installation is particularly hard with small rocks, called glacial til, I believe. The area is too tight to get a back hoe in and I would basically have to dig a trench with a digging bar. This area is sloped and is one of the drainage paths. I am thinking of using 2 inches of 3/4 minus gravel or combination of clean and minus and putting landscape fabric over that to keep the one inch of sand that I plan to put on top. I plan to use the black plastic landscape edging, it says 6" but is really 5 1/2". There are plant beds on either side and I thought that I could bring the mulch (medium bark) up to cover the other side of the landscape edging. As I add up the height of all the components it would seem that my edging is high enough but if it weren't or I needed more sand could I ride the edging on top of an inch of gravel say. One last thing. How hard is the rule about using pieces inch and a half to two inches. I have noticed that on my skids of flagstones there are some thinner pieces as well that look only about an inch or more. This is my first stonework so I really appreciate the help.

A neighbor of mine used to complain about his edging coming loose. I put an 8" spike perpendicular through the bottom, about an inch up, and that solved the problem. I don't recall it being on gravel, I think it was dry soil, but this might work if you run into this later on.

If you bought 1 1/2" or thicker and received less than 1 1/2" thickness you should be able to return them for the correct size. If not, I'd put the thinnest ones aside and hope I had enough to get it done without them, or just use a very few here and there. All stone can break regardless of thickness, so replacing one once in awhile is a given.

Good luck with your project ;-)

Thank you. I was planning to place stakes along the edging path. I bought the flagstone by the skid at a big discount. What you get is what you get. Wasn't sure if even using one inch pieces anywhere was total futility or just reasonable risk.
