Cutting Bluestone

Posted by helmsman MA (My Page) on

I have a number of large pieces of bluestone left over from a section of patio that we redesigned. I'd like to use some of it to make a fireplace surround. What's the best way to cut it? I don't necessarily want a smooth edge like a concrete saw might give. Can I score it with a brick chisel and break it?

Yes. Score it on the side you don't want to show. It can flake a bit, so be careful when scoring near the edges of the piece.

You might want to experiment using a propane torch to roughen the edges. It causes pieces of rock to flake off. I've seen this done before and it looks cool, but I think they were doing it on granite.
