For the past 9 months I've been working on various stone projects around my property, and thought this group might be interested to see them...

Enjoy!

Wow I love that look. Your house has a very different look too. I wonder if I could get enough rock out of my mother's garden to do mini walls.

Try it - its very rewarding. Also, you can slowly collect the rocks if you're not in a hurry. Visit sites where they're making new roads or subdivisions. A lot of times they uncover nice stones that otherwise just go to waste.

Thanks for posting your pictures. I've built a couple of much less ambitious projects (although I've worked on them for several summers) and can appreciate all the work that goes into them. I like how you took pictures along the way to illustrate the story of the walls' construction. I wish more people would post stuff like this here, it's exactly what I hope to find in this forum but rarely do.

Juggler,

Thanks, and glad I could provide something meaningful.

Makes my back hurt just looking at your photos. You must have one heck of a 'power-tool'.

Fire,

It is hard on the back if you're not careful. We moved, cut and placed all the stones by hand, with the exception of the giant boulders (we used a back-hoe). No 'power tools' :-) Just a wheelbarrow, a hand truck, and muscle.

Beautiful,
Now how do I get my husband to get more interested in rocks? Poor man has already brought me about 6 pickup loads of rock for the pond and rock garden. I haven't had the heart to tell him we aren't even half way there yet! Maybe showing him all the wonderful things you have done will get him more interested.
Thanks,
Martha

Thanks Martha. My advice would be to find him some help to build walls. Its difficult to do on your own. I got some High School students to help and paid them well, since this is hard work. It paid off, I think. Once you see the work coming along, it becomes infectious and you want to keep going. After all, a dry-laid stone wall can last for centuries if done well, so its like building a monument in a way.

Here's a link to the video that inspired me:

RE: Multiple Stone Projects

When I was a child, we lived on a very rocky hill, and my grandpa, who lived next door, by hand built rock terraces. The yard was beautiful, and so many places to grow wonderful things.

I was too little to understand how hard it was for him, but now I know!

Great photos!!
