flagstone walkway in southern New Hampshire

| We are going to put in a flagstone walkway (6' by 20'). I have received a quote of $2100 for materials alone which seems very high. The material quote is only for the walkway. We have old granite posts on the property which we will use for a bench and then 3 posts to define the back area. The total cost of the project (described below) is $6300 which again seems incredibly high. I called around and folks quoted me $250-500 for a pellet which seems right to me? I am wondering what others think of this quote? I am just trying to make sense of this bid? Thanks so much for all your help!
The walkway is six foot wide x twenty foot long flat natural flagstone walkway, with a brown tone, tightly fitted; the stones of variable size from one to two feet in diameter. The walkway will flare as it approaches the driveway. (this is the material we will need to purchase)
Construct a granite bench of aged granite already on-site, to the side of the walkway.
Install three granite posts along the front of the landscape, where it meets the driveway. These will really help to create a country feel, and set the tone for the entire landscape.
Total cost, high estimate: $6300. |

| I know this is an old post, but it is still unanswered. The material quote is way out of proportion by almost $1,000. If you say that the flagstone is brown in color, it might be Tennessee Flagstone, which is more expensive, but not even close to that number. Have also in mind that concrete, cement and sand should be included onto the calculations. I would need details on the work to give you an estimate from us (just as a reference), but that price sure is high. I am going to post a link of different walks we have done, not even ONE is close to that price. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Flagstone Walks.

| Thank you so much for your response. We did not get the work done as it seemed very expensive to me. I am not sure how to give specifics -- my ignorance. The walkway is as above and we will need to purchase the materials. The area is basically flat and is just dirt right now. On the left of the path will be a granite bench. We have all the granite on the property. What kind of details would you need? Any help with price would be greatly appreciated. Your flagstone walks are beautiful! Thank you so much for including this. Our walk would be a little windy like your first one and we would not have concrete and cement between the stones but probably some kind of herb/grass. Thanks again! |

| I would need to know a little bit more info about the posts and the bench. I am sure that looking at the stone, I would be able to figure out the design. But not like this. If you get the materials (including, stone dust and flagstone) the walk should not be more than $1,500 - $2,000. This fluctuation is based on season, how difficult it is to get to that walk, how far away from the curbside delivered material, etc.... Material should run for about $500 for regular flagstone and up to $1,000 if the flagstone is special color such as Tennessee. For the posts and bench, I would need to see the design and the stone to give you a price, but it should be about $2,000 at the most if you provide the material and the posts are not too big. Again, this are approximations, but I hope they help. The best idea would be to search at least 3 quotes from licensed contractors. Good luck! |
