Coloring flagstone?

I installed a flagstone walkway on top of my cement walk to my front door out of some whitish flag pieces that unfortunately look a lot like (slightly rough chunks of)cement. In the back yard I have a nice stone patio and path of Tennesee Blue Stone that is rust and bluish: a look that I wouldn't mind having out front. I am wondering if any of you has had success attemting to color or stain flagstone to look like attractive stone. I have seen some stained cement that looks nice. Do you think I might get similar effect with this flagstone. I don't know what it is but it is commonly sold locally here in North Carolina.

Have you tried washing the stone??

You can get any concrete cleaner at home depot and just wash the stone with a hard broom.

That usually gets rid of cement stains as well as rust or moss on the stone.

If that does not work, I would recommend changing the damaged stones. Painting is NEVER a good idea on stone...

Let me know if you need more info.

Rocha, thanx for your response. I didn't see it for a month since this site is mostly inactive. However I think you misread my post. My stone is clean; it is just boring white and I would like it to HAVE MORE color (blues and rust).

I paint mine. I have Arizona tan flagstones that I stain with a wash of water and acrylic paint. It does not last more that two years, but I don't mind, since it's easy to mix water and paint and brush it on. I have made dark gray flagstones and "mossy" looking flagstones.

My dad has used oil-based stains to change the unfortunate mismatching on a few stones at his house, and they look fantastic. He buys little cans of stain and blends them with rags. There are some concrete stains available too, but I believe they are very expensive.

Renee,
thanks so much for your response. That was exactly what I was hoping to hear. Do you know if your father's oil stained work lasted any longer than your acrylic paint?
