How the heck do you keep dirt off of your pathways????? I try not to let dirt fall (on it) when I shovel and or plant new plants.... but there always seem to be build ups of dirt that shallow rooted weeds just LOOOVE to grow in.... How do I fix this???? I'm not sure how all the dirt is getting there.... maybe run offr when there are heavy rains..... It has been very rainy this year and the pathways are paticularly dirt ... - maybe that's a clue..... but I don't really know the reason...... Any suggestions????

I just put in a field stone pathway in my garden this summer and have had a similar problem--dirt washing from garden and over my rocks. I've just lifted the rocks affected and added some dirt underneath to raise them a bit. Of course I'm trying to grow moss in between my stones but keeping out the other things is a continuous battle. Just walking on it could track some of the dirt from your shoes, pets, squirrels burying nuts, rain splatter--all would contribute to the dirt getting misplaced onto your pathway. Unfortunately I think it is just something you will just have to live with. Roundup may help with the weed control.

I have access to truckloads of free wood chips from a tree service. Most of my paths are mulched so deep they are higher than the mulched beds that are covered with trees, shrubs, and groundcovers. The paths are rounded so they can be walked on at night. You can feel the top in the middle so it is very easy to navigate in limited light. Plus I have no borders to worry about except when the groundcovers grow out on the path. They are easy to trim and replant elsewhere. The mulched paths decompose and feed the plants. A path lower than the beds ends up wetter, dirtier, and harder to maintain. Who says the paths have to be lower than the beds? Is it a holdover from the raised bed veggie thing?

It's an old brick pathway that was laid down before I got here..... I've thought of replacing it since I've added a few walkways since I've been here.... I
