Need advice on type of stone for wall

Hello everyone! I have been thinking of having a small (less than 2' tall x about 50'long) dry stone wall built, so I've been out looking at stone. The most inexpensive I can find is Fieldstone (.20/lb) next is Rainbow Stone (.27/lb) also at .98/lb is Colonial Blue Stone, South Bay or Van Tassel. My question is, does it matter? Does one type of stone hold up better than another? Over time as the stone ages will they all look about the same with mosses, etc growing on them? Our home is 200+ years old so I don't want anything that looks too "modern" and I definately want natural stone, not a concrete product. TIA!

Stone durability usually isn't an issue. First question is who is going to build the wall? The type and shape are important to that person, and the appearance will be a combination of the material and that person's style. You need to buy stone by the pallet, not the pound. You can check the Stoneyard website for comparison prices (they are in Littleton) or other ideas. Yes, all stone eventually turns gray in New England, but you might not want to wait 50 years, so you should get stone that you can look at from day one.
