treatment of cut edge of stone

This past summer I built a blue stone retaining wall, and I used square flagstones for the cap stones. My problem is the cut edge of the capstones looks to smooth(like it was just cut) and not natural
I was wondering if anyone knows any techniques that can help make the cut surface more natural

Ive heard you can do it with an acetylene torch but im not sure of the truth of it

Thanks

This process has a number of names, fettling, dressing etc. and is best done before placement. When stones were cut by hand it was a process to even out a rough or chipped edge and this is the look you are after even though the purpose is the opposite in some ways! What you do is chip up the edge with a hammer, you can use a hammer and chisel or a bosch hammer and I suggest you try it out on a spare piece of stone first.

I do landscaping (planting and maintenance) so I'm light on details but I have seen our stone man do the torch thing. I would test it on scrap first. He flames the cut edge with acetylene torch, the heat pops the edge of the stone. He doesnt use safty glasses but he's young and a little dumb...safety glasses first, I say. It doesnt seem complicated but I suspect, like everything else, that practicing the technique will lead to a better result.
