Killing Moss

About a year ago, I put in a stone walkway to our front door. The grass has grown inbetween the stone nicely, but the stones are so covered in moss that walking on the surface is dangerous. Any ideas for killing the moss without killing the grass?

Short term ... a wire brush can scrub it off, but there is nothing that will keep it from growing back in a shady damp area. Correct the moisture and shade problems that are encouraging the moss and it willstay gone.

I once threw a bucket of Lysol mop water that had alot of dirt I didn't want to put down the drain, out the door onto a moss path to the Japanese garden. It killed it and didn't grow back for a year. This in an area where Roundup only kills the moss for 3 mos. You could try scrubbing each rock with Lysol? No idea what it would do to grass.

Varsol.... I had some type of Moss growing on my roof, I took brush with coarse bristles and scrubbed it off... I has not come back in 3 years... In that spot anyway... like the previous post, don't know what it will do to the grass. Hope it works. Toby

A home pressure cleaner works well, but if you don't have one of those, I've used clorox and a broom.

I've never heard of moss making for bad footing- are you sure that you don't have an algae instead? if it's moss- ie comes up in sheets from the stone- I'm sure you can find someone to strip it, adopt it, and feel like they got the better end of the deal. if it's algae- a scrub brush and simple green, or one of the citrus cleansers will beat it back- and a sprinkling of sand over them will finish the job .

We always apply lime to our grass to get rid of the moss that grows in it. Works really well. We have a shady backyard.

Boiling water should kill it. I use it for the weeds that grow between stones. Works great!!

I have moss killing my lawn. The parts of the lawn face the north and the west. I get plenty of sun in the west so I dont understand why its taking over. I have a little dog and dont want to put harmful chemicals on the lawn. If I use a soap mixture what would be the ratio?

We live on vancouver island and get alot of moss on our roof as well.We have found that Tide with Bleach laundry soap powder works best.Sprinkle it all over the roof-kills the moss and it doesnt come back for a few years.Works on cement work and stones as well.Worth a try!!
