Can you add an addition to a paver patio?

About 5 years ago we had a patio installed using EP Henry pavers. The patio is about 15'x25'. I'd now like to extend it so that it is 15'x32' (by just adding 8' to the one side). Can this be done without compromising the integrity of the existing stones? I'm thinking that I would need to put boards or something in place to hold the existing stones and base while I expand the hole in the ground and fill it up. Is this something that's do-able? Additionally, since my pavers now have 5 years worth of fading, will the new ones I put down always be a different shade, or do they all eventually fade to a "set" color? I really don't want to pull everything out and start all over. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Thanks so much,

Michelle

Actually, you may be better off not trying to save the outermost row or two of stones, and plan to carefully remove them exposing the bedding upon which they were installed. That way you can be sure that the integrity of the base and bedding material won't be compromised as it will support no load, and it will be exposed so you can grade and compact the new base and bedding material to match it. After that, when the new base matches the old, you can start laying in the old stones and the new.

As to the question of fading and color, if I were you I'd purchase a few of the new stones first and lay them out on the existing to see just how much, if any, fading has occured, and how bad it may be. It may not be all that bad, and you may find it acceptable. Worst case is you have to pick up a few more rows of the existing stones, carefully, and start 'blending' the new and old together so any color differences have less of an impact.

That's good advice - I would also caution that it is very difficult to compact base enough so that it doesn't settle any more. Even 1/4" could be objectionable if you are matching levels to an existing surface. Get the new base compacted with a plate compactor, let it sit in the rain a few times, compact again and you should be ok. Pretty late in the season to start this kind of project but it would a good idea to get the topsoil out and the base in so it settles all winter.
