Wiring 220 high voltage to a remote garage!

I am building a hobby shop 200 feet from my home's electrical meter box. My question is, can I pull the meter and connect underground rated 6-3 or larger type cable to the box with a disconnect box installed in line, and then run 210 feet of cable underground to the hobby shop and connect it to a circuit breaker box? Thus giving me 100 amps of 220 volt service to the shop to be used as needed.
The plan is: Pull the meter, connect wiring from the meter box to a disconnect box (for safety), run wiring underground for 200 feet to a 100 amp circuit breaker box, and then break the amperage into useable levels from there. I will be running a 5 hp, 3 phase motor, on a phase converter, to power my engine lathe as my largest power consumer toy. Can anyone provide recommended type wires and disconnect boxes? Communication is a lot better thing than electrocuting myself. Thanks for your feed back! |

I am not sure what you mean by "pull the meter"? It is not legal to mess with the meter. I suspect you don't intend to and that I am just misunderstanding you. If you really need 100 Amp service in the garage, the 6-3 wire should work for that distance. See Table 2 at this link: http://www.metalwebnews.com/howto/ph-conv/ph-conv.html The disconnect box is very good for safety but also servicing anything down stream from the source. Larry |
RE: Wiring 220 to my garage from the house

| I moved my washer and dryer into my garage. Now I need to extend the 220 outlet to the garage. I was told to use #10 wire. How far can I extend the wire before I need a heavier gauge wire? The garage is only about 30 ft. from the house. If 30 ft. is ok, I'll just use a splice box and extend the wire. |
