opinions on a modification of bucket garden

Some of you are probably familiar with the self watering bucket garden that uses a rain gutter. It seems to work really well but also seems kind of pricey, so I've been pondering a modification and would like some input. I was thinking about building a rectangular frame out of scrap lumber, two by eight or something like that, lining it with construction plastic and then setting nursery pots in it. This seems a lot more simple than all of the drilling and net cup stuff he does. I thought it would also give me a lot of flexibility of moving plants out and setting new ones in. I've attached a link to his youtube video.

Here is a link that might be useful: bucket rain gutter garden
