building a hoop house

17 years ago

yesterday I went to build a PVC style hoop house but it ended up being made out of cattel panals instead

here is how my day went

first I cut the 20' lenghts of 3/4" PVC to 19' 6"

{{gwi:287644}}

then cut them in half to 9' 9"

{{gwi:287645}}

stuck em in the ground at a distance of 10' apart instead of the directed 12' span

{{gwi:287646}}

it made the total hight higher but still not as narrow as I really wanted and the pices didn't stay together too well

{{gwi:287647}}

and

{{gwi:287648}}

so I packed up my special oreder parts (the crosses)

{{gwi:287649}}

then pulled out my 5' X 8' utility trailer

{{gwi:287650}}

and drove up I-95 to Southern States and bought 3 cattal panels at $20.00 each

{{gwi:287651}}

I pulled out the palms I had pot planted and set them out of the way

{{gwi:287652}}

{{gwi:287653}}

then filled the holes so I wouldn't trip and break a leg

{{gwi:287655}}

I pulled out some of the tools I would be needing to use

{{gwi:287657}}

Built the base frame out of some PT 2 X 8 lumber 12' 3" X 8'

{{gwi:287658}}

using the claw of my hammer works good at digging out under the fram to level it

{{gwi:287659}}

I cut some stakes to anchor the base and nailed to the inside middle of the longer sides and about 12" in from the corners on the shorter ends

{{gwi:287660}}

using 1" wide X 1 1/2"long galvenised staples I connedted the wire panals to the inside of the base

{{gwi:287661}}

I used pluming pipe insulation on the ends of the frame

{{gwi:287663}}

then started building the end walls ( I used untreated 2 x 6 because that is what I had on hand and this is only going to be a tempery building

{{gwi:287665}}

to atatch the end wall to the wire panels I used some HVAC vent straps

{{gwi:287666}}

after searching endlessly for some weed block I had to take that dreaded Saturday afternoon trip to Home Depot

{{gwi:287667}}

I used some 30" 4 X 4's to use as a base for a walkway covered with 5 5/4" decking boards

{{gwi:287668}}

I placed the palms inside the house

{{gwi:287669}}

and unrolled the 6mill 20' wide clear construction grade plastic

{{gwi:287670}}

then finished for the day after stapling the plastic to the base with lots of 1" wide staples

{{gwi:287671}}

I am using some old storm windows for my door and backwall window . I did that today but no pictures yet

hope this helps anyone

Jim
