Green house glass

I want to build a green house out of old windows. Should I use double pane with the gas evacuated from them or single pane?

The gas is supposed to prevent condensation between the two layers, as well as being a slighter better insulator if it's argon gas. But from what I read, the gas has leaked out of a lot of the old ones anyway, and there's no way to tell.

The double pane would be stronger and better insulated. As long as it didn't condensate between the layers of glass, I think it would be better.

Old double pane units were vented to the outside (they have a tiny copper tube somewhere on the perimeter as the vent). Newer units are sealed and typically filled with an inert gas (argon or the like).

Typically newer units will have a better R rating (insulation), but you need to be careful NOT to get ones that block the sun, assuming you want maximum light and heat in your GH. Possibly not even low-e or the like. If you are getting new units, you can as to see the transmission rating of the glass you are buying.

Of course you are in an entirely different climate than I am, and you may actually want something to reduce light and or heat.

You also might want to pay attention to the type of glass used. Tempered glass offers some safety over plain glass, in that it will break into many tiny pieces, much less likely to cut you. Regular glass will break into large chunks with sharp edges; not the things you want falling on you from a roof say during a hail storm. Ideally for the roof, you'd use tempered laminated glass (what car windshields are made from).

I really dislike double pane and I know I am in the vast minority on that one. I see them fail far too often and when they do they are a pain to clean. I personally like thicker tempered glass though its much harder to find. I figure it has a lot to do with the local as well, if I lived for say in Wisconsin you don't have much of a choice but to go with extra insulation, whereas in the south single pane glass does quite well in most areas.

If you plan to heat your greenhouse, even minimally in winter, you will save money if you use doublepane glass.
